7th Largest in the US

San Diego was at 1.2 million back in 2000. We have to be nearing 2 million by now. LA is the 2nd largest in the US with 3 times(!) the population of SD.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth @ L5

"Pete Rock hit em off..."

Anyone else notice what a great job the L5 programmer has been doing?

Update: Man, what a great show. These guys have been around for what, 12 or 13 years, and they were still fresh as hell. There are few things as sublime as a MC that not only has a smooth melodic voice but also actually enunciates. I guess he isn't CL Smooth for nothing. Here are the pics.

Thanks to JussPress for hosting the photos.

Kanye & Dilated @ 4th & B

Never thought I'd see someone from the Roc share the stage with arguably the tightest crew out of the LA underground.

Kanye West / Dilated Peoples
Doors: 7pm, show: 8pm
$35.00 (yikes)

Update: Overall a good show and I'm glad we went.

Dilated: tight with the lyrics, beats, and tablism, as expected.

Young Gunz: man, these guys stink. I still can't believe the Dilated had to open for them. I used to DJ in garages at house parties and the random cats who would grab the mic and freestyle sounded better than Young Gunz.

Kanye: good but not great, though I had pretty high expectations. His band and backup singers were dope. I never seen a violinist cover hip-hop beats which was a treat.

Album Review

Believe the hype, College Dropout is good; as Mos Def says, meet the future of hip-hop. "Get Em High" is the hot track; few things are more sublime than Talib Kweli and Common coming with their battle raps.

However, Dilated's latest effort, Neighborhood Watch, is a bit of let down. Its not bad, its just missing that "rock-that-sh*t" quality that digs in and moves the listener. There are some gems, don't get me wrong. The best track is "Closed Session"; similar to "Get Em High" the guest appearances make it hot. Its hard to go wrong with West Coasters like Defari, Planet Asia, and Phil Da Agony.

Starsky & Hutch

Christel and I saw Starsky & Hutch last night. Everybody's sayings its fun movie but I was like, when's the fun start? The ending was decent but then the guys from original TV show appear. You know, the lame but requisite cameos included in a movie remake. Pretty subtle how these guys just show up and stand around. Snoop, though, plays a good pimp. Thats just conjecture on my part because I've never actually met a pimp.

J-Live & People Under the Stairs @ Canes

J-Live! PUTS! At Canes
9pm, $15

Oooh wee, what a show! The opening act was a crew called Giant Panda that was suprisingly good. Nice beats and good enunciation. People Under The Stairs came on after and man if you ever get a chance to catch a PUTS show don't miss it. They put on a tight show. All three members are real professional entertainers. They've got mini-comedy routines, great beats, head-nodders and party rockers.

Last but not least was J-Live and he definitely earned the right to have the word 'live' is in his name. He is a dope MC, especially given that PUTS is a hard act to follow. J-Live's show was a bit rushed but there is hardly anything else more sublime in hip-hop than seeing Braggin' Writes performed live, where J gets behind the ones & twos and scratches while MCing at the same time.
