One of the American heats of the DMC World DJ Championships will be held at California Sound & Lighting. I highly recommend CSL for your DJing needs. They have a decent record selection for hip-hop and dance. Ask BJ (aka DJ Hektik) for his recommendations. Also, you can ask Paul Morgan about the latest gear. He definitely knows his salt when it comes to the latest equipment.
The last time I saw MMM his performance was a little less than inspiring. Hopefully he'll be showing off something fresh and brand new. Also, Kebbi Williams, "Saxophone Player for OUTKAST", will be there.
"Schwarzenegger already has exceeded the highest approval rating ever reached by...Gray Davis..."
Whether or not I post this here I have a feeling we're going to this.

Update: If I was Tony Pierce I would have written a review like this. But I'm not so I can't so just go and check out the busblogger already. "and the fucker did it in heels".
Update: Great concert. It was ulta-polished but not just a routine. I could tell he's trying to move away from his older songs because he stuffed most of his 80s hits into a short medley. The rest was straight up funk. It was interesting when he let some women on stage to shake their thangs. One lady even brought her kid on stage, and when people my age start bringing their kids to see bands I like I get the feeling I'm pushing up in the years.
Got my tix. Musicology arrived in the mail. Not his best but pretty damn funky and his band sounds great.
7:30 PM, $50
9pm, $21. Speaking of MF Doom, I've been listening to Madvillainy. Its a bit different...I dig Madlib's beats but MF Doom has a lazy, muffled vocal style, like Erick Sermon rapping with his mouth full. Regardless, I rate it one of the better albums this year.
Say hi to the new puppy. She's the best!
The galleries for the Common and Z-Trip shows in LA are now up.
Just had to say that Nu-Mark's latest, Hands-On, is burning up my deck. It is supremely hot. Its got some of that rare & groovy instrumental ish plus a great song with Chali 2na. I'M CHARLIE TUNA!!!
Author Bruce Sterling is coming to Mysterious Galaxy! I just have to say that my dog-eared copy of Schismatrix gets re-read once a year. I'm half-way through Zenith Angle; not as good as Schismatrix but still pretty entertaining.
This looks like his only SoCal show. Update: woohoo! Got my tix. This weekend is looking up! All we need is a travel crate for Bella.
Update 2: looks like the show is sold out.
Update 3: We're at Rolan and Angie's place, just a block up from the El Rey. G*ddamn, what a show! Z-Trip is the man. Big ups to his partner in crime for the show, Danny James Phillips aka DJP. This is ish that Z originally did in '99 Five years ago and I'm just picking up on it now. Unbelievable. Now, anybody know where I can pick up the Uneasy Listening CD?
Amazon
Update 4: Here are the pics.
This is another LA event. Usually when he's with DJ Dummy its a straight up hip-hop show (rather than a rock mix with his live band).

In case your not going to LA for Common and have no ends for Too Short then check out the Honey Beehive for some no-cover underground hip-hop and D&B.

1409 C Street - downtown San Diego.
Some hot ish happening Friday but LA has the upper hand on live shows. This is Nu-Mark's release party for his new album Hands On.
Mr. Yahoo himself Chali 2na will be performing, along with J-Live. Wow, three top-billers at one event. It looks like there'll be a couple of Beat Junkies there too. $15.
Just got some books off of Amazon, though whenever I do it seems they just get queued up in my stack of unread books. Oh well, they look cool on my bookshelf.
The Confusion: the second in Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle trilogy. I really enjoyed Quicksilver; who would've thought the backstory to inventing calculus was so intriguing.
An Army at Dawn, The War in Africa, 1942-1943, Volume One of the Liberation Trilogy: I'm turning into a WWII junkie.
The Zenith Angle: A computer geek gets tapped for Special Ops against terrorists. Did you think I was going to pass up a premise like that?
Any fan of 90's underground hip-hop should read this well-written article on the rise and fall of Rawkus Records. I've got more than a few pieces of Rawkus vinyl in my crates but its amazing to see just how many artists they've featured listed in one place.

Free gallery opening. Interesting that its in Clairemont/Bay Ho.
